In February 2024, I traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for a surprise birthday trip with my friends during Super Bowl weekend and just before Valentine’s Day. Between relaxing in the Romantic Zone, walking along the Malecón, eating fresh seafood by the beach, and enjoying Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife, the trip quickly became one of my favorite long weekend getaways in Mexico.
Recently, my friends Veni and Arica officially confirmed our annual trip together for this year, and it immediately made me start reminiscing about our getaway to Puerto Vallarta in 2024. What started as something the three of us (Veni, Arica, and I) have tried to do since we first met in Spain in the summer of 2013, has slowly evolved over time, with Galina joining along the way. Since she and Veni are sisters, she naturally became part of our travel tribe, and now every trip with them somehow turns into one of the highlights of my year. Unfortunately, Arica could not make it to Mexico with us that time, but the trip still became one of those weekends I know I will remember for a long time.

So in February 2024, right before Valentine’s Day and during Super Bowl weekend, I traveled to Puerto Vallarta for Veni’s birthday, and the surprise actually happened there. Instead of telling her beforehand, I showed up at the hotel in Puerto Vallarta to surprise Veni in person. Seeing her reaction in that moment made the entire trip instantly feel unforgettable. It set the tone for everything that followed. The long weekend was emotional, joyful, and full of excitement from the very start.

What made it even funnier, looking back, is that nobody at my job even knew I had gone to Mexico. I had simply taken a long weekend off and never felt the need to explain where I was going. There is something oddly satisfying about quietly disappearing for a few days, when in reality I was on the Pacific coast celebrating a surprise birthday trip. I started doing this when I still worked at the airport, and I still do this with every job. (Including my current one.)

From the moment I landed, Puerto Vallarta felt warm, lively, and welcoming. The airport was a little chaotic, but once I was able to get into an Uber, all was well. (Catching an Uber from the airport is an adventure in and of itself, honestly.) February was the perfect time to visit. It was gorgeously sunny but not overwhelming, and definitely better than whaetever weather New York was experiencing. And because it was the weekend leading into Valentine’s Day, the entire city felt especially vibrant. Restaurants were full, music carried through the streets, and the Malecón was constantly alive with people enjoying the weekend atmosphere. As my first introduction to Puerto Vallarta, it was truly perfect.

Traveling with my friends always guarantees a good time. There is an easy rhythm between us: exploring, relaxing, eating well, and laughing at everything and nothing. Since it was Veni’s birthday weekend, the entire trip naturally felt like one long celebration.
We spent most of our days wandering through Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone near our hotel, which quickly became my favorite part of the city. The streets were full of color and character: bright colorful buildings, small local shops, street vendors, and restaurants in every corner. What stood out most was how seamlessly the city balances the ease of a beach town with culture and nightlife. During the day, everything felt slow and relaxed. By night, especially late at night, it came alive.

Food ended up being a major part of the experience. Every meal turned into its own long moment, whether sitting by the water, ordering rounds of fresh seafood, and margaritas, watching the sun set over the Pacific, or at other restaurants with patio seating arrangements. Some of my favorite memories are just the conversations we had at those tables, with nowhere to be and no rush to go anywhere.
One of the most memorable afternoons was walking along the Malecón just before sunset. The entire boardwalk was full of life: musicians performing, couples strolling ahead of Valentine’s Day, street performers drawing crowds, children running around, and vendors selling handmade crafts. I understood why so many people, especially Americans, move to Puerto Vallarta. The ocean views were especially beautiful as the sky shifted into soft pinks and oranges. The weather was perfect in February. It was one of those moments that made me again question why I still live in New York.

Super Bowl Sunday added another layer of energy to the trip. Every sports bar and restaurant was packed well before kickoff. Even being in Mexico, you could feel the excitement in the air. We spent the afternoon eating, drinking, and bar-hopping, catching glimpses of the game surrounded by locals and travelers alike, all caught up in the same moment. Since neither of us is really into football, we did not make watching the game a priority. We did have a proper sit-down meal in one of the beachfront restaurants to watch Usher’s halftime performance.

But the real highlight of the trip was really surprising Veni. Birthdays while traveling are just so much better. The location, the spontaneity, and everything happening outside of normal routine makes it feel more memorable. Whether we were getting ready for dinner, getting massages, taking photos near the beach, or walking through the city at night, the weekend had a really fun, easy energy the whole time.

On my last day, Puerto Vallarta had this unexpected wind that made everything feel a little emotional and more reflective. It was unseasonably breezy for the coast, and people were wearing light sweaters, lingering along the shore instead of rushing into the water like the days before.
Looking back now, especially with another trip officially on the calendar, what stands out most is the tradition we have built. No matter how crazy our lives get, we always try to find a way to escape together. Puerto Vallarta in 2024 ended up being one of those perfect chapters filled with warm nights, ocean air, endless laughter, good food, and time spent with people I genuinely love traveling with.
Some trips are memorable because of where you go, and others because of who you go with. This one was very clearly both. And even though we are not heading somewhere beachy this time, I already know it’s going to be fantastic because of who I am traveling there with. That’s the part that never really changes, and honestly, it is what makes me look forward to it more than anything else. If you are planning a girls trip, birthday getaway, or long weekend in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is one of the best destinations for combining beaches, nightlife, food, and relaxation in one trip.
