Cruising to the Bahamas for Christmas / Croisière aux Bahamas pour Noël

Today I am reminiscing on a trip that happened ages ago. In fact, it was during my first Christmas break in college. When we were little, of course my parents played Santa and gave us a bunch of gifts for Christmas. However, as we grew older and stopped believing in Santa, they decided to start gifting us with experiences instead. While this meant we would not have the typical Christmas, we all still have great memories from those Christmases as well.

So for Christmas that year, my mother used CruiseCritic and booked us on a 4-night cruise to The Bahamas. We were booked on the Sovereign of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship. When it was completed, that ship was the world’s largest passenger ship. And from my memories, that ship was indeed extremely huge. There is a reason why cruises are called “floating cities” after all. After spending the night in Orlando, we sailed out of Port Canaveral in Florida. The included stops were Coco Cay (a private island owned by Royal Caribbean), and Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.

I was 17 and it was my first time on a cruise and in The Bahamas. Needless to say I was extremely excited for this trip. Back then I was not even thinking about becoming a travel blogger, but I was still very eager to discover somewhere new.

I remember the check-in lines to get on the boat were pretty long, but they moved at a pretty good pace. As soon as we got on the ship, we decided to walk around so we could learn where the main points of attractions were located. For dinner, we were assigned to the second seating, which gave us more time to enjoy some of the boat’s activities before dinner. Generally on cruises, the first seating is more geared towards families with children.

The next morning, after eating a full breakfast, we were among the first few to get on a tender towards Coco Cay. Coco Cay is essentially a giant shore excursion playground. There is so much to do there. I think my brother tried almost all of the adrenaline-filled activities. The lines were very long for the most popular things, and that is the only reason why he did not do everything. Meanwhile my parents mainly lounged on the beach. After eating lunch on the beach, we returned to the ship. My parents did not want to stick around and be among the last people to get on the tender back. They anticipated the lines would be long and chaotic.

When we got back on the ship, I don’t think we returned to the cabins immediately. There was a flurry of activities on different levels. We walked around, observing and randomly participating here and there. Dinner that night was formal, and I remember opening gifts with my family before heading to dinner. After dinner we attended a show and it was pretty entertaining.

The second morning, we docked in Nassau. As fun as Coco Cay had been, I was eager to see the “real” Bahamas. Conversely, my brother preferred to stay on the ship. Between the pool and the teen lounge, he had managed to make some friends. Though it was Christmas day, my parents did not insist on bringing him along. After ensuring he was going to be okay, we were off to explore Nassau.

Shore excursions can be booked via the cruise line’s website or through CruiseCritic. But we were in Nassau mainly to walk around and shop, so we did not book any for the day. We ended up at a market where we ran into a few Haitian vendors. I also remember tasting some desserts somewhere. It was not the typical Christmas morning for our family, but I cherish that morning spent exploring the area near the port of Nassau.

On our last day, the ship did not stop anywhere. Our entire day was spent at sea, heading back to Florida. This made my dad seasick. He had done so well during the trip so far, that we had not even realized he actually was uncomfortable on the ship. Thankfully, we were able to get him something to help with the motion sickness. I remember feeling sad that day because the trip was almost ending. It felt like there was still so much I had not done. I tried to partake in as many activities as I could and stayed by the pool until almost 4am that night.

This year, as my parents and I are spending Christmas in two separate cities, I find myself missing them tremendously. And while the trip to The Bahamas was not a traditional Christmas, looking at the photos and remembering how it went makes me eager to book another cruise for us on CruiseCritic.

Aujourd’hui, je me remémore un voyage qui a eu lieu il y a déjà quelques temps. En fait, c’était pendant mes premières vacances de Noël à l’université. Quand nous étions petits, bien sûr, mes parents jouaient au Père Noël et nous offraient de nombreux cadeaux à Noël. Cependant, lorsque nous avons cessé de croire au Père Noël en grandissant, ils ont décidé de nous offrir des expériences de préférence. Même si cela signifiait que nous n’aurions pas de Noëls typique, nous gardons tous d’excellents souvenirs de ces Noëls également.

Ainsi, pour Noël cette année-là, ma mère a utilisé CruiseCritic et nous a réservé une croisière de 4 nuits aux Bahamas. C’était sur le Sovereign of the Seas, un navire de Royal Caribbean. Une fois achevé, ce navire était le plus grand navire à passagers du monde. Et d’après mes souvenirs, ce vaisseau était en effet extrêmement énorme. Il y a une raison pour laquelle les croisières sont appelées « villes flottantes » après tout. Après avoir passé la nuit à Orlando, nous avons quitté Port Canaveral en Floride. Les arrêts inclus étaient Coco Cay (une île privée appartenant à Royal Caribbean) et Nassau, la capitale des Bahamas.

J’avais 17 ans et c’était la première fois que je partais en croisière et aux Bahamas. Inutile de dire que j’étais extrêmement surexcitée par ce voyage. À l’époque, je ne pensais même pas devenir blogueuse de voyage, mais j’avais très envie de découvrir de nouveaux endroits.

Je me souviens que les files d’attente à l’enregistrement pour monter sur le bateau étaient assez longues, mais elles avançaient à un bon rythme. Dès que nous sommes montés à bord du navire, nous avons décidé de nous promener pour savoir où se trouvaient les principaux points d’attraction. Pour le dîner, on nous avait inscrits au deuxième service, ce qui nous a laissé plus de temps pour profiter de certaines activités du bateau avant le dîner. Généralement sur les croisières, le premier service est plutôt pour les familles avec enfants.

Le lendemain matin, après avoir pris un petit-déjeuner complet, nous étions parmi les premiers à embarquer en direction de Coco Cay. Coco Cay est essentiellement un terrain de jeu géant pour les excursions hors du bateau. Il y a tellement de choses à faire là-bas. Je pense que mon frère a essayé presque toutes les activités riches en adrénaline. Les files d’attente étaient très longues pour les trucs les plus populaires, et c’est la seule raison pour laquelle il n’a pas tout fait. Pendant ce temps, mes parents se sont prélassés sur la plage. Après avoir mangé sur la plage, nous sommes retournés au navire. Mes parents ne voulaient pas rester et être parmi les derniers à monter à bord du navire auxiliaire. Ils s’attendaient à ce que les files d’attente soient longues et chaotiques.

Lorsque nous sommes remontés sur le navire, je ne pense pas que nous soyons retournés immédiatement vers les cabines. Il y avait une multitude d’activités à différents niveaux. Nous nous sommes promenés, observant et participant au hasard ici et là. Ce soir-là, le dîner était formel et je me souviens avoir ouvert les cadeaux de Noël en famille avant d’aller dîner. Après le dîner, nous avons assisté à un spectacle et c’était plutôt amusant.

Le deuxième matin, nous avons accosté à Nassau. Aussi amusant qu’avait été Coco Cay, j’avais hâte de voir les Bahamas « pour de vrai » . A l’inverse, mon frère a préféré rester sur le navire. Entre la piscine et le club pour adolescents, il avait réussi à se faire quelques amis. Même si c’était le jour de Noël, mes parents n’ont pas insisté pour qu’il vienne avec nous. Après nous être assurés qu’il allait bien, nous sommes partis explorer Nassau.

Mais nous étions à Nassau principalement pour nous promener et faire du shopping, nous n’en avons donc pas réservé pour la journée. Nous nous sommes retrouvés dans un marché où nous avons croisé quelques vendeurs haïtiens. Je me souviens aussi d’avoir goûté des desserts quelque part. Ce n’était pas un matin de Noël typique pour notre famille, mais je chéris cette matinée passée à explorer les environs du port de Nassau.

Lors de notre dernier jour, le navire ne s’est arrêté nulle part. Nous avons passé toute la journée en mer, en direction de la Floride. Cela a donné le mal de mer à mon père. Jusqu’à présent, tout s’était tellement bien passé pendant le voyage que nous n’avions même pas réalisé qu’il se sentait en fait mal à l’aise sur le navire. Heureusement, nous avons pu lui procurer quelque chose pour lutter contre le mal de mer. Je me souviens être triste ce jour-là parce que le voyage touchait à sa fin. J’avais l’impression qu’il y avait encore tellement de choses que je n’avais pas faites. J’ai essayé de participer à autant d’activités que possible et je suis resté au bord de la piscine jusqu’à presque 4 heures du matin cette nuit-là.

Cette année, alors que mes parents et moi passons Noël dans deux villes différentes, ils me manquent énormément. Et même si le voyage aux Bahamas n’était pas un Noël traditionnel, regarder les photos et me rappeler comment cela s’est passé me donne envie de réserver une autre croisière pour nous sur CruiseCritic.
