Luxembourg has intrigued me for years. As a child studying geography, I used to mistake it with another small and rich European country: Liechtenstein. Having now been to Luxembourg, I am still very interested to contrast it with Liechtenstein (whenever I make it there). Because I had studied the European Union from its inception until the early 2000s, I was also very interested in discovering one of the three major EU capitals.
One thing I have always enjoyed about traveling Europe, is the fact that so many countries are so easily reachable, that it is possible to see many different new locales within a short time span. That is how I tacked on Luxembourg to a trip where the majority of my time was spent in Belgium, in addition to the Netherlands and France.
The itinerary of the day in Luxembourg was pretty straightforward: my goals included seeing the major attractions and eating something good. The capital of Luxembourg is also Luxembourg, and commonly known as Luxembourg City (to clarify when speaking only about the city and not the country). Traveling there from Brussels is pretty straightforward and easy. The journey takes less than 3 hours. You can travel by train or bus, and if you have a car, you can also just drive. Some people also choose to fly in, which makes sense if you’re traveling from further away, or if you are really pressed for time.
My favorite thing about Luxembourg City is that it is completely walkable. I chose to do it with a guide, but it is not at all necessary unless you want the insights and history background. It was a delight walking in and around the fortress (Bock Casemates), both above and below the city (in the part known as the Grund). While the fact that the city is on different levels may be confusing, I found it charming because my guide was able to convey a true sense of the history contained within the walls. Upon entering the city by bus, the first landmark that captured my attention was the Adolphe Bridge. The Adolphe Bridge was built to celebrate Luxembourg’s independence from The Netherlands in 1890, and is named after Grand Duke Adolphe. The first stop was the obligatory stop at Gëlle Fra (the Golden Lady), a monument built in memory of the Luxembourger soldiers who fought in the World Wars and in the Korean war.
From the Golden Lady, we entered the Notre Dame Cathedral. The stained glass inside the Cathedral is truly spectacular and I spent a few minutes admiring the detail before exiting the Cathedral toward the next stop. I remember walking just a short distance to the Grand Ducal Palace. I found it odd how easily it was to walk up to the gates of the Palace. Despite Luxembourg being one of the richest countries in the word, the area surrounding the Palace was very unassuming and plain. The Palace is located in the middle of the old town, guarded by just two guards and guided tours are frequently offered in the summer.
For lunch, our guide led us towards the Place d’Armes, a square in the old town, surrounded by cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops. I remember picking a restaurant haphazardly, swayed only by the fact that I saw someone enjoying some delicious looking pasta.
After lunch, our guide took us all along the Chemin de la Corniche, a bridge from which excellent panoramic pictures of the city can be taken. Really, the afternoon was spent doing more walking, before heading back towards Belgium.
It was such a quick and easy day trip, that I believe many more people should take advantage of Luxembourg’s proximity to Germany, France and Belgium, and add it to their Europe trip. Because I went in August, our guide stated that the city was crowded, but the crowds in no way compared to the more popular European cities I visited on that trip. The weather was also very pleasant, and I learned that it tends to stay warm and nice between April and October.
