A taste of Chile / Un aperçu du Chili

I can’t help but reminisce about my birthday trip to Chile in 2016. A few months after a successful birthday trip to Egypt where I celebrated with strangers who had turned into friends, I decided that all of my birthdays going forward would be celebrated abroad.

I planned to arrive in Santiago on a Friday, then make my way over to Easter Island for the weekend, before returning to the mainland to explore Santiago, Valparaíso, and head north to the Atacama desert. I had planned a full solo itinerary spanning 10 days, and I was really excited. Due to time constraints, I did not plan to visit Torres del Paine National Park in the South. Packing for such a bio-diverse trip would have been near impossible anyway.

As luck would have it, a crazy snowstorm hit the Northeastern coast of the United States. I remember trying to get in touch with American Airlines for hours to figure something out. They finally rebooked me on a different flight, and after a brief layover in Miami, I landed in Santiago on Monday, on the day of my birthday!

I had booked all of my excursions through one of the best marketplaces for tours and activities, a sort of travel middleman. They had graciously allowed me to cancel some of the planned activities (such as Easter Island), so I did not lose too much money. Though I always invest in travel insurance, I did not reach out to my insurance company on this trip . (And I still haven’t because thankfully I have never needed to.)

With the limited time, I had to cram a lot of activities in just 6 days and sacrifice quite a few. Somehow I managed to hit Valparaíso, the Concha y Toro winery, “hotspots” around Santiago and the beach at Viña del Mar among other things. I met a fun group of diverse people at my hostel in Barrio Bellavista, and I was able to enjoy the nightlife in Santiago with them. Towards the end of my week, several of them were trying to convince me to stay in Chile as they were heading to either the Atacama desert, Torres del Paine, Argentina or Bolivia. It was extremely tempting, but I needed to return to my job. I had some goals that I still needed to accomplish, and I could not quit on a whim.

I choose to see this experience as a positive. The good thing about not having been able to visit all the parts of the country that I wanted to see is that I now have a great excuse to return. I definitely want to see the Moai on Easter Island and the natural wonders of both the North and the South of Chile.

Je me souviens encore de mon voyage d’anniversaire au Chili en 2016. Quelques mois après mon superbe voyage d’anniversaire en Égypte où j’avais célébré avec des étrangers qui étaient devenus amis, je m’étais mise à l’idée décidé que tous mes anniversaires à l’avenir seraient célébrés en voyageant.

J’avais prévu d’arriver à Santiago un vendredi, puis de me diriger vers l’Île de Pâques pour le week-end, avant de retourner sur le continent pour explorer Santiago, Valparaíso et me diriger vers le nord dans le désert d’Atacama. J’avais prévu un itinéraire solo de 10 jours et j’étais vraiment excitée par ce voyage. Faute de temps, je n’avais pas l’intention de visiter le parc national de Torres del Paine au sud. Faire mes bagages pour un voyage avec tant de changements climatiques aurait été de toute façon presque impossible.

Pour mon malheur, une terrible tempête de neige frappa la côte nord-est des États-Unis. Je me souviens avoir essayé de rentrer en contact avec American Airlines pendant des heures. On m’a finalement mis sur autre vol, et après une brève escale à Miami, j’ai atterri à Santiago lundi, le jour de mon anniversaire!

J’avais réservé toutes mes activités avec l’une des meilleures compagnies permettant de planifier ou de réserver une multitude d’activités offertes par différentes compagnies à travers le monde, une sorte de courtier de voyage. On m’a laissé annuler certaines des excursions prévues (telles que l’Île de Pâques), donc mon argent n’a pas vraiment été gaspillé. Bien que je m’assure toujours d’acheter une police d’assurance voyage, je n’ai pas contacté ma compagnie d’assurance lors de ce voyage. (Et je n’ai jamais eu besoin de le faire jusqu’à présent, heureusement.)

Avec mon temps limité, j’ai fait de mon mieux pour participer à autant d’activités possibles en seulement 6 jours. J’ai dû en sacrifier quelques unes. J’ai réussi à visiter Valparaíso, le vignoble de Concha y Toro, les endroits intéressants de Santiago et la plage de Viña del Mar entre autres. J’ai rencontré un groupe amusant de personnes diverses là où j’étais hébergée au centre de Barrio Bellavista, et j’ai pu profiter pleinement de la vie nocturne à Santiago avec eux. Vers la fin de ma semaine, plusieurs d’entre eux essayaient mème de me convaincre de rester au Chili ou de me joindre à eux pour continuer l’aventure vers le désert d’Atacama, Torres del Paine, l’Argentine ou la Bolivie. C’était extrêmement tentant, mais je devais retourner à mon travail. J’avais des objectifs que je devais encore accomplir, et je ne pouvais pas démissionner sur un coup de tête.

Malgré mes déboires, je choisis de voir cette expérience comme quelque chose de positif. L’avantage de ne pas avoir pu visiter toutes les régions du pays que je souhaitais voir, c’est que j’ai maintenant d’excellentes raisons pour y retourner. Je veux vraiment voir les Moai sur l’Île de Pâques et les merveilles naturelles du nord et du sud du Chili.
